7 Tips for choosing relocation firm
By Janie Pritchett-Clark
Relocating employees is an important job. An estimated 380,000 families are relocated for work-related reasons each year, and the industry that serves them claim that annually some $24 billion is spent on corporate relocation.
Winter Moving and Storage in Bentonville is an Atlas Van Lines Agent, and Atlas is a world leader in moving and logistics. We asked John Winter, president of this family-owned company what makes a smooth move.
1. Get a visual assessment. You can’t really make a move over the phone or the Internet. By Federal law, movers are required to make an in-home estimate of the goods they’ll be relocating, unless you sign a waiver. “It’s the only way to accurately access the amount and weight of the goods,” says Winter. “Which is the only was to accurately determine a price that won’t fluctuate after the sale.”
2. Pay on invoice. It’s risky to pay anything up front. A reputable company will present an invoice at the time of delivery and accept payment then. There are many risks otherwise, he advises.
3. Get 2-3 estimates. Competitive bids are an important part of the process and it must include in an in-home inspection. You can gauge the quality of service by who shows up at your door, what questions they ask, and how they handle yours.
4. Look for the logo. Beware of movers who show in rented trucks. That’s because there are strict regulations about carrying cargo across state lines. A rental truck can travel interstate, but it’s unlikely your possessions will be insured, which could prove costly if the driver was involved in an accident
5. Ask for proof. From liability insurance to workman’s comp, make sure your carrier has current coverage and certifications. Ask to see their participation in associations such the Better Business Bureau and Chambers of Commerce. And, be sure the company is a member of the American Moving and Storage Association (AMSA).
6. Consider the network. Especially important on long hauls, the logistics company’s support network is a valuable ally. For one, it ensures the consistency and level of performance all along the way. Any problems that arise just about anywhere can be handled quickly and professionally.
7. Ask for referrals and references. The best compliment is a referral, and mistakes can often be waylaid with a reference check.
