How to Hire a Mover

What if your new job is somewhere else? We asked Winter Moving & Storage for how-to help on making the move.

1. Find out the company’s relocation policy. If they don’t have a specified carrier, get estimates to compare costs with the policy. This is your chance to renegotiate terms.

2. Compare apples to apples. Make sure estimates are consistent regarding services that need to be performed: hauling down items from (or to) the attic, mini-storage, temporary storage, transporting vehicles, accessibility to each residence, high-value items, and any other special concerns.

3. Investigate their reputation. Don’t take the movers’ word for it. Ask around. Visit their office, ware-house, and meet key personel. You’ll gain insight on their level service.

4. Know your rights. Visit www.protectyourmove.gov to learn about your rights and responsibilities, valuation options, and how to protect yourself against moving fraud.

5. Read the fine print. Be sure you understand the information provided by the mover. And be sure to ask questions if you don’t.
